With the kind permission of Quentin Blake, BISEE Books have produced a series of folded cards and envelopes for every occasion, using the wonderful illustrations that Quentin created for the Book Bus. They are now available to purchase by post; for more details click here.
...and their family and friends who donated money in lieu of wedding presents to build two new book corners in Ecuador, and who volunteered for 3 weeks on the bus as part of their honeymoon!
From 24th November until the 4th December 2011 the BISEE Book Bus took part in the International Book Fair in Quito. Authors came on board the bus to read, not only to children, but also their parents and grandparents! A great time was had by all.
A big thank you goes to Melanie and Alexander Hom who asked their wedding guests to donate money to BISEE Books in lieu of wedding presents!
BISEE Books would like to say a big thank you to Pinner Parish Church for their very generous donation, which has gone towards the construction of book corners in some of the poorest schools in Ecuador. Click here to see some photos!
On 15 March 2010 the BISEE Books mobile library service is to be officially launched in Ecuador in memory of the girls. The BISEE Book Bus is a mobile library packed with children’s books, play equipment and art and music supplies which will visit schools in the Amazon, Andes and coastal regions of Ecuador. At least 25 schools will benefit, starting with the community school in Bajo Ongota in Amazonas Province. The launch event was held at Bajo Ongota school on 15 March 2010 at 11.00am
Starting in 2010, the Book Bus will work with schools in the Andes, the Amazon and on the Pacific coast. The Bus will be based in each region for 3 months according to the school academic year and weather conditions.
The bus will operate throughout the year and each school we visit will have a designated “Book Bus Day”. On this day we spend the day at the school and work around class timetables to provide resources, energy, ideas and time to listen to children read. Our visit day is often the only day when these schools will have access to a wide variety of books.
The Book Bus also provides additional manpower to allow small group reading mentoring.
Working in small groups volunteers will spend time with the children, encouraging them to read and develop literacy skills. Supplementary to this we encourage children to dramatise books they have read or even create a piece of art from it; the required resources are carried on the bus. This helps increase their understanding of literature, boosts confidence and allows them to develop new skills and most of all –discover the pleasure of reading.
Children are only part of our working relationship! Working closely with the teachers we share ideas and skills to help them develop after school book clubs with the books we loan.
